"How Little We Know..." (8/14/16)

ARCHIVE 8/14/16

One of my favorite songs has made the cut onto the album. I first heard it in the 1944 film, To Have and Have Not. Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael penned it for Lauren Bacall to sing to her onscreen/offscreen lover, Humphrey Bogart. It was the film that brought the famous pair together for the first time, marking the start of their epic romance [Lauren and Bogie, that is :) ] . Nothing was ever certain for them as the odds weighed heavy: a 25-year age difference, his marriage, the volatility of acting careers in Hollywood; the disapproval of the film Director who warned that Bogie's feelings toward his counterpart were typical displays for a Hollywood actor "getting into character". Their love was not perfect, but it lasted through life's trials until his death in 1957. "No one has ever written a romance better than we lived it," she wrote.

I admire the way Bacall breezed through life both onscreen and off. Going with the flow. Working tirelessly in work and relationships: both romantic and familial. There were presumed affairs on both sides; idealistic tendencies; health complications; But I like the story best knowing they were human like the rest of us. I am doing my best to take a page from her book (and I am, in real life, reading her autobiography) and breeze through life - accepting the good with the bad and keeping a sunny outlook. Part of life is understanding your lack of control over it.

"Maybe it happens this way. Maybe we really belong together but, after all, how little we know.

Maybe it's just for a day. Love is as changeable as the weather and, after all, how little we know.

Who knows why an April breeze never remains?... why stars in the trees hide when it rains?

Love comes along casting a spell; Will it sing you a song - will it say a farewell? Who can tell?

Maybe you're meant to be mine. Maybe I'm only supposed to stay in your arms awhile, as others have done.

Is this what I've waited for? Am I the one? Oh, I hope in my heart that it's so....

...in spite of how little we know."

- HOW LITTLE WE KNOW, Johnny Mercer / Hoagy Carmichael

I'm now enjoying a brief retreat with friends in Skaneateles, resting up for what will be an epic week of rehearsals and recording sessions. The week begins with a band rehearsal tomorrow in Manhattan and ends with dual recording days on Thursday and Friday in CT. Since my last update, I lost my original studio booking due to circumstances outside my control. Channeling my inner Lauren Bacall, I calmly worked for 24 hours to contact studios and found a wonderful alternative. The project will now be recorded at Carriage House Studios in Stamford, CT. Located only 45 min from the city, I will now have the opportunity to bring some fantastic musicians up for the day. I have also worked through some very difficult personnel changes, but am extremely happy with the current sound and blend. I'm honored to be playing with my favorite musicians. Also since my last update, Assaf Gleizner and I wrote three new original songs: two of which are making it onto the album. How little we know, right?

"Music that makes the wind blow, silently through the window...

Seen as the breeze awakens the trees, then whistles toward the meadow.

Music that drifts above you, welcoming hearts to love what's peaceful and seeking and true.

Some will try to capture it and hide it; losing time, for love won't be divided.

Music that cools the weather brings all the world together...breeze by breeze."

- MUSIC THAT MAKES THE WIND BLOW, Kim Hawkey (music by Assaf Gleizner)

Can't wait to keep you posted on the progress.

Love, music and happiness,

And now the fun begins! (7/19/16)

ARCHIVE 7/19/16

Dear Friend,

You are one of over 105 supporters of my debut recording project, to be released this year. Thanks to your overwhelming love, support and generosity, my goal of $8500 has been reached and even topped, with the grand total amounting to $8,875. Every penny of this money will be put toward this debut recording of Vintage and Original songs; including tracking, musicians, album design, physical production, mixing and mastering.

I will say once more: THANK YOU. This is a dream that has been growing for the past two years; a dream that will come to fruition in a month! You are allowing me the rare opportunity to create and produce a project independently, with full, creative license given to my imagination and to the brilliant minds of my collaborators.

The freedom has already sparked my muse! There are now four original songs in the works, which I hope will make it to the final album. These originals reflect and complement the selections of the classic jazz, pop and folk songs that I chose for the project. I can't wait to use this project as a way to honor great songwriters while carrying on their tradition with new music and lyrics!

The Recording Session

Next month in Woodstock, NY! Check out the magical DREAMLAND STUDIOS, where we will be tracking the session over two full days. I will be joined by Assaf Gleizner (pianist/co-writer), Ray Cetta (bass), Mark McLean (drums), Bjorn Ingelstam (trumpet), Joe DiGiorgi (engineer), and Ryan McGovern (videographer). As the arrangements come together, we will decide what other sounds and voices will suit the tracks.  **POST EDIT: The recording was done at Carriage House Studios in Stamford, CT over August 17-18, 2016

I can't wait to send out the rewards! You will receive a "survey" from Kickstarter via email, which will ask you about Reward preferences and mailing/emailing info, depending on whether you selected physical perks or digital/personal perks. CDs and Digital Albums will go out after the recording is complete, of course. I am projecting November 2016, but it may be sooner. Music Lessons in person and via Skype may be scheduled at your convenience! I will be in touch, but feel free to contact me directly if you want to discuss availability - kimberly.hawkey@gmail.com

That's all for now. Please enjoy my latest in the Vintage Song Youtube series. Happy Summer!  Love and music always

 ~ Kimberly

Coming to you from school! (7/11/16)

ARCHIVE 7/11/16

Hi everyone!

I am on lunch break at SUNY Purchase right now. I am delighted to spend the next two weeks coaching a Creative Vocal Lab precollege course for middle and high school students. These kids rock! 3 hours in and they have already improvised their own 4-part arrangements of pop songs (Don't worry, I'll get them into the old stuff very soon). It's very inspiring. What a beautiful, bright light in the midst of our current challenges.

I want to let you know that the project is 80% funded! Woohoo! Thank you for believing in this album. I KNOW we will make the goal in the next 5 days. It simply has to happen, because your support is confirming my faith in this project more and more every day. I am  so inspired to continue working on my material for the upcoming recording, which will happen in Woodstock in a little over a month. Please continue to share and nudge! Additional support is still needed for this album to come to fruition.

Love and Music always,

PS - If you are in Brooklyn this Wednesday, come out to a free Swingaroos show at Radegast Hall and Biergarten. 9pm-12am!

Happy American Song Day! (7/4/16)

ARCHIVE 7/4/16

Happy 4th of July everyone!

I decided it should also be the unofficial day of AMERICAN SONG. It's a very special day in which I get to tell all my backers that we are 62% funded! There is $3,210 left to raise in 12 days, which will all go toward tracking at Dreamland Studios, mixing/mastering, musicians, CD printing and video documentation.

To go along with the good news.... I am NEARLY completely unpacked in my new home in Washington Heights. :phew:

That was a crazy few days and I can't help but feel like I've lost a few days in promoting this campaign. However, I have the overwhelming support of the first half of my backers (YOU), which is giving me fuel to push ahead with vigor for the next 12 days.

If you are still looking for ways to help, you can share this link with friends. Word-of-mouth is the best! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kimberlyhawkeymusic/vintage-song-kimberly-hawkeys-debut-album/

Keep an eye out for some song videos I plan to post now that I'm settled! Thank you all again!

xoxo Kimberly
